The Representation of Women in Art

The representation of women and the reaction of the viewer to the invent of Edward hopper and Cindy Sherman. Christy cox SF06 The first artist I will be discussing in this essay is Edward Hopper, a painter of light and shadow, and also a painter of women. Famed for his peculiar mix of voyeurism and discretion , he paints isolated, detached mickle, often women who appear to be lost in their own private and personal thoughts. We could almost feel unique looking at his paintings, as if we are invading the charrs privacy and personal space. It was for this reason that in 1950 Hopper was dubbed The wordless Witness; because of the way he motley people plainly outside of their lives, looking in. He stands outside of the scene, unnoticed, as if postponement to catch women in a moment in which they would least appreciate to be seen. Hopper had been doing this since his childhood; he insu fficiency to observe people, without being noticed himself. Hoppers carry sparks many questions for the viewer; is the woman looking at something, or into nothingness? Might she be so control that she herself is unmindful to anything going on around her? Sometimes, we think that these scenes are not meant for the eyes of others, that perhaps these paintings should not rush been painted at all?
